How to Enable Non-G/L Changes to Closed Periods in NetSuite

Here’s a quick tip on how to enable non-G/L changes to closed periods in NetSuite!

How do closed periods work in NetSuite?

Once an accounting period is closed, you are unable to edit any transactions within that closed period. The ‘Edit’ button on these closed period transactions won’t show, and you will instead see a lock icon next to the transaction number to designate that it is in a closed period.

Why would you want to enable non-G/L changes to closed periods in NetSuite?

Perhaps you want to add a memo or edit a PO number without having to credit and reissue invoices. Additionally, some ISV solutions require this setting in order to sync their data with locked and closed periods.

How do you enable the feature in NetSuite?

You’ll have to enable a setting on the Manage Accounting Period page.

To enable the editing of transactions within closed periods (without G/L impact):

1. Navigate to Setup > Accounting > Manage Accounting Periods.

2. Choose the period you would like to edit.

3. Check Allow Non-G/L Changes.

4. Save!

Now, any NetSuite user with the permissions to make non-G/L changes will be able to make them – even to a record in a closed period.
