The Top 10 Favorite Document Management Features of SharePoint 2013 – Not Possible with Traditional Windows Folders
This blog highlights 10 brilliant features of Microsoft SharePoint designed to help users easily create, manage, share and collaborate on documents. 1. Share Documents Inside of Your Organization Does this sound painfully familiar? You email your coworkers a document for review, they add feedback and send back their edits. With three or four different documents you now have to manually consolidate all comments and changes. Sounds like a barren and banal task. There is a much smarter way of handling document reviews and changes. With a Microsoft SharePoint site, you can save your Word file (or any file really) directly to your SharePoint document library, then use the built-in Share commands to let your coworkers read and edit the file. No more file piles, but just one copy with everyone's feedback. In addition, SharePoint comes with versioning allowing you to keep track of edits and editors and with easy to […]

Using JS Link to Resize an Image Column in Microsoft SharePoint 2013 List View Web Part
Problem In a recent Microsoft SharePoint project, our client wanted to have pictures of their team members displayed on the home pages of the different SharePoint sites. In order to ensure consistency we advised our client to set a fixed length and width of the pictures, regardless of the dimensions of the images uploaded by the users. SharePoint 2013 Standard, Enterprise and Online come with an out-of-the-box web part specifically designed to display team members. Our client, however, wanted to utilize the free on premise SharePoint Foundation deployment. SharePoint Foundation does not come with this feature nor does it come with a User Profile Service Application to sync users with Active Directory. Note that in addition to SharePoint Foundation, the solution below also works for SharePoint Standard, SharePoint Enterprise and SharePoint Online Solution Below is a screen shot of the final result followed by the step-by-step instructions: Solution Design List […]

Solution to SharePoint 2013 Issue: Content Search Web Part Does Not Retain Properties When Creating a Site From a Custom Template
The Scenario Our goal was to have a reusable site template that could be used to provision a SharePoint site with pre-existing web parts via a workflow. We started by creating a team site, adding various web parts, libraries and custom metadata. We finished by creating a home page with a Content Search web part that would show the ten most recent documents across all libraries in the current site. We then saved this site as a template. Next, we instructed the workflow to create a new subsite using this template whenever an item was added to a list at the root site. But after populating documents on the subsite, we found that our web part was not showing document images properly. The issue can be seen in the image below. Problem & Analysis The SharePoint Content Search web part does not retain all of its properties when a site […]
