Sharegate: an Easy to Use Microsoft SharePoint Migration Tool
At FMT Consultants we recently reviewed a wide range of third-party SharePoint migration tools. Our choice of preference: Sharegate. Our experience with this migration tool was simply great. From installation to migrating, everything was simple and intuitive. Following are some of the Sharegate features that made it stand out from other SharePoint migration tools. UI Design The first thing you’ll notice about Sharegate is its simple and intuitive user interface, allowing even novice users to use the tool. Pre-Migration Check It is always a good practice to find and resolve potential errors on the source farm before any migration. With Sharegate, you can perform a pre-migration check to identify potential issues you may run into while migrating, and proactively resolve them in advance to ensure a smooth migration. A Migration Tool for All SharePoint Versions Sharegate can migrate content from any version to any version of SharePoint. Sharegate supports SharePoint […]
Solution to SharePoint 2013 Issue: Content Search Web Part Does Not Retain Properties When Creating a Site From a Custom Template
The Scenario Our goal was to have a reusable site template that could be used to provision a SharePoint site with pre-existing web parts via a workflow. We started by creating a team site, adding various web parts, libraries and custom metadata. We finished by creating a home page with a Content Search web part that would show the ten most recent documents across all libraries in the current site. We then saved this site as a template. Next, we instructed the workflow to create a new subsite using this template whenever an item was added to a list at the root site. But after populating documents on the subsite, we found that our web part was not showing document images properly. The issue can be seen in the image below. Problem & Analysis The SharePoint Content Search web part does not retain all of its properties when a site […]
A Quick Introduction to Business Process Flows in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013
What are Business Process Flows? Business Process Flows in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 are a new and powerful addition to the Processes section that helps visualize the necessary steps in a business process. From MSDN: A business process flow guides you through various stages in the business process, from start to finish. …..The process flow will tell you where you are in the process, where you came from, and what to do next. You are able to continuously monitor your own progress.  Source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn481586.aspx Creating/Modifying Business Process Flows As business process flows are an out–of-the-box construct in CRM 2013, it is quite simple to create or modify a business process flow. The easiest way to view all business process flows is to first select Settings on the command bar, then Processes from the sub-options in settings. Planning Document Management in SharePoint 2013
Microsoft SharePoint 2013 enables organizations to build a document management solution specifically tailored to their organizational needs, and to better manage the life cycle of their documents. To make sure that this solution is both practical and at the same time comprehensive, a fair amount of planning needs to take place before the solution is built. This article describes how to plan an effective Microsoft SharePoint 2013 based document management solution. The document management planning process consists of the following major steps: Identify Users The first step is to identify the users of an organization who interact with documents on a routinely basis. To identify these users, a comprehensive survey should be conducted to determine who creates documents and what types of documents they create. Furthermore, the survey should determine what roles the various users of a document have. These roles describe who creates documents, who reviews the documents, who […]
The Importance of a Solid SharePoint Methodology
Avoid Living in a “SharePoint Shack”! “Why would I pay a SharePoint consultant to implement something that is so cheap to buy?” When implementing Microsoft SharePoint, many organizations slap together the basics found in SharePoint Foundation 2013, maybe add some categories, provide some custom views, and tweak the User Interface to make it pretty. Basically, slapping together a “SharePoint Shack”. The shack “works” but falls far short of delivering the efficiencies and processes to provide measurable increases in productivity and other benefits. Any SharePoint solution should enable you to work with data and computers the way we do in 2014. Poor adoption rates and tools not matching up with the needs of specific stakeholders are the results of building something without proper plans. Whether an internal network administrator, or a SharePoint Consultant with not much more than a Microsoft Windows administration background, is tasked, without the critical phases, to develop […]
SharePoint 2013 User Profile HTML Properties Lose Values on Edit – Here’s the Work-Around
The Problem In SharePoint 2013 there is a common problem that occurs when editing a user profile in situations where there is more than one HTML user profile property. In these instances, all the HTML properties except for the last one on the page will lose their values. This problem occurs in both SharePoint 2013 Online and On Premise. And it occurs on both the user profile edit pages accessible from SharePoint Central Administration and from My Sites. The Reason The problem is caused by a logical JavaScript error on the user profile edit page. A Java-Script function PopulateEditableRegion() is generated for each HTML property and is responsible for populating the HTML property with its value of the edit page. When there are more than one HTML property, this function runs only for the last HTML property on the page. function PopulateEditableRegion() { var editableRegion = document.querySelector('[InputFieldId=ProfileEditorEditAboutMe_hiddenRTEField]'); if (editableRegion) editableRegion.innerHTML […]

SharePoint and the F.O.S.H. Life – Human Resources (part 1 of 4)
F.O.S.H. Stands for Finance, Operations, Sales and Human Resources and denotes four areas in an organization where SharePoint can have an immediate impact. SharePoint is a tool that can be tailored to any business to enhance communication and automate repetitive business processes within and across departments. One real life example from the “H” in F.O.S.H. is the employee life cycle. SharePoint can be used to streamline all of the Human Resources processes while enhancing communication between HR and other departments - from the moment a position is requested until an employee leaves the company. Open Position When a manager realizes the need to open a position, s/he should consider answering the following questions: Why is this position open? What are the qualifications you are looking for? Who approves the opening? Who will be involved with candidate selection? And who will this position report to? Using SharePoint, the position requisition process […]

Improving SharePoint Application Performance
Refining your custom SharePoint solution's performance is an important and worthwhile effort. If your application's lists have a few hundred or less items, then performance may not be an issue. Such low numbers are easy to process and the servers can handle it with ease in most cases. If you have nearly 1,000 lists the application may become sluggish resulting in issues being reported by the users. To avoid a sluggish system, we recommend that you review the code for the following common issues: 1. Not making unnecessary connections to the server. 2. Keeping our data sets clean of extra columns or data we don't use. 3. Properly closing SPSite and SPWeb. 4. Loops are being handled correctly and are not redundant. 5. Wherever we query SharePoint, we're using CAML to get our items, not simply using Linq against an item collection. If the common issues stated above do not […]
