Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online Upgraded to 2013: Where Are My Related Activities?
If you’ve recently upgraded to CRM 2013 and haven’t merged your existing forms with the new forms, you might be wondering how to create activities with the ‘Regarding’ field already populated with your Accounts, Contacts, Leads, etc. In CRM 2013 it is easy to find the Quick Create button at the top of the form and by clicking it you can quickly create Tasks, Calls, Emails, etc. However, when the form opens you will have to manually select who the activity is for (e.g. fill in the ‘Call to’ and ‘Regarding’ fields”): Nowhere else on the form does there seem to be a place to create an activity, and you may ask yourself “Where is the equivalent of my ‘Add’ tab or related entity?” The reason you may be having difficulties is that you may be looking at your old customized form and not seeing the new form in CRM […]
Improving Performance with Access Teams in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 – a How-to Guide
Introduction Access Teams is a new addition in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 that brings along a new way to define privileges and permissions for entities in CRM. Prior to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 (in CRM 2011), security roles were the only means by which privileges were defined for entities. These privileges— Create, Read, Write, Delete, Append, Append To, Assign, Share—were defined in configurations for Security Roles from a User level of access to an Organization level of access. Once security roles had been configured, they were then assigned to various users or teams where the privileges defined in the security roles would get additively applied. However, there are a couple of caveats with the previous implementation of security: Security roles defined privileges for an entire entity. Due to the cumulative effect of security roles, if a user has several roles and/or belongs to a team with a role, performance can […]

Step-by-Step Guide to Portal Development for Microsoft Dynamics CRM
The Challenge Oftentimes in the world of Dynamics CRM, the need arises for non-CRM users to gain access to CRM data. A common solution is the implementation of a web portal which allows these users to perform certain actions on applicable CRM data. Microsoft offers two portal solutions: the Customer Portal and the Partner Relationship Management Portal. These are managed solutions, can be easily imported into any CRM environment, and come with detailed instructions on how to quickly and efficiently deploy. However, like any construct that is general in its scope, the aforementioned portal solutions do have some caveats. The two solutions install extraneous features onto CRM that are not necessary for portal development, often confusing CRM users and requiring the need to go back and hide all of the excessive customizations. Furthermore, by default, the two portals both use Windows Live for authentication (requiring users without Windows Live to register […]
How to Configure Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 to Use a Host Header and an SSL Cert
Most CRM deployments require using both host headers and SSL certificates. As small a requirement as it may seem, making this happen can be a bit tricky and I’ve personally had my share of late nights here and there just to get this to work. As a result, I’ve decided to put together this short article to document the steps required to resolve this issue, and at the same time be of help to anyone ‘out there’ who might encounter the same problem. A typical error that comes with using multiple host headers for the same port (or the attempt thereof) is as follows: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service ‘/orgName/XRMServices/2011/Organization.svc’ cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation. The exception message is: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. If your service is being hosted in IIS […]

Technology, The Future …... Now?
I recently read an interesting book by Michio Kaku, called Physics of Future. The book contained his predictions about science and technology over the next 100 years based on leading research being done today. He predicts many things from self-correcting genes to space elevators, and some of his most interesting concepts relate to the world of computers. Based on the exponential increase in computing power and continual reduction in processor sizes, he predicts a world in the next 20-30 years where computer chips are cheaper than paper, and distributed throughout the environment. People can control machines with their minds, access the internet through their contact lenses, and have robots performing many human functions. He also discusses how hardware continues to follow this path of improved performance, while software struggles to keep up because a human actually has to write the code and program the software, while a laser can create […]
Hubspot vs. ClickDimensions
Marketing Software Comparison – When CRM Is Not Enough The decision to invest in a marketing automation tool is critical to your organization’s marketing success. We recently took some time to evaluate and compare two very popular marketing solutions. First we looked at HubSpot, an “all-in-one marketing software” with a major focus on driving inbound marketing. The second product we evaluated was ClickDimensions, a Microsoft certified email marketing and marketing automation solution built for Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Then we identified two pros and two cons for each solution. HubSpot Pros 1. Search Engine Optimization What truly makes HubSpot a great inbound marketing application is because of its SEO tools. HubSpot includes a built-in keyword analysis tool that enables you to find and track your most effective keywords. Another powerful SEO tool offered by HubSpot is their Page Grader, this allows you to diagnose and fix poorly ranking pages by providing […]
