Sharegate: an Easy to Use Microsoft SharePoint Migration Tool
At FMT Consultants we recently reviewed a wide range of third-party SharePoint migration tools. Our choice of preference: Sharegate. Our experience with this migration tool was simply great. From installation to migrating, everything was simple and intuitive.
Following are some of the Sharegate features that made it stand out from other SharePoint migration tools.
UI Design
The first thing you’ll notice about Sharegate is its simple and intuitive user interface, allowing even novice users to use the tool.
Pre-Migration Check
It is always a good practice to find and resolve potential errors on the source farm before any migration. With Sharegate, you can perform a pre-migration check to identify potential issues you may run into while migrating, and proactively resolve them in advance to ensure a smooth migration.
A Migration Tool for All SharePoint Versions
Sharegate can migrate content from any version to any version of SharePoint. Sharegate supports SharePoint 2003, SharePoint 2007, SharePoint Foundation 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, SharePoint Foundation 2013, SharePoint Server 2013 and SharePoint Online.
No Server-Side Installation
Another great feature about Sharegate is that it doesn’t require any agent to be installed on your servers. You can install it on any computer using Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003/2008/2012. In this way, you can avoid unnecessary installations on production servers.
Full Site Migration
Sharegate does not only support migration of site content, but you can also migrate your complete SharePoint site from one location to another.
Preserve Properties and Settings
When you migrate with Sharegate, content maintains its properties and settings. For example, it preserves the ‘Created by’ and ‘Modified’ columns. No information is compromised during the migration process, and Sharegate fully preserve all SharePoint document and item version histories.
Migration Security
No need to worry about security on your new SharePoint farm. With Sharegate all your security settings remain intact during migrations.
Remap Site Columns and Content Types
Another powerful feature that distinguishes Sharegate from other SharePoint migration tools is the ability to map the site column and content types from the source farm to the site columns and content types on the destination farm.
Migration Reports
Sharegate provides detailed migration reports which can be easily exported to excel. These reports provide a clear overview of any errors, warnings and successfully migrated items.
In addition to what’s listed above, there are lot of other great features in Sharegate such as scheduled migration, bulk metadata edit, import content from file share, migrate term store and many more. Based on our experience with Sharegate, the product is extremely powerful and well supported by the Sharegate team. Due to its simplicity and ease of use, it is definitely an absolute winner when it comes to migrating SharePoint sites, content and settings.
